City Hall:
GEN. INFO. McFarland City Hall / Heritage Ctr. is located in a fully renovated former Rock Island depot. The depot was originally moved to McFarland by rail from Peck, KS on March 7, 1954, and re-assembled in front of the Modoc and used as a depot by the Rock Island Railroad and formerly SSW railway until April 1990 when it was sold to the McFarland Centennial Committee for $ 1 dollar. By May 1990, it had moved to its current location, and in September 1990, it was officially given to the City of McFarland. The first City Council Meeting was held on February 11, 1999. McFarland City Hall accommodates the offices of the City Clerk, Utility & Street Superintendent, City Council Meetings, and the Heritage Center.
HOURS McFarland City Hall is open to the public on an “as-needed basis,” which means that work permitting, someone will be there. The Superintendent generally is in the office an hour more or less in the morning from 7 – 8 AM, Noon, and at times during the afternoon. City Clerk hours vary from an hour in the mornings on Tues & Weds from 8 –9 AM and most days M – F 10 AM to 3 PM work permitting.
LOCATION City Hall is located just north of the City Park & Ball Field at 518 Rock Island Rd.
Heritage Center:
The City of McFarland Heritage Center is located inside the City Hall (former Rock Island Depot) and is open by chance or by appointment. The Heritage Center is a repository of Rock Island memorabilia, some from the McFarland area, and photos of the railroad, town, and its past.
USD 329 Mill Creek Valley has 2 schools located in two cities. Alma Grade School 1-5 in Alma. Middle School 5-8 in Paxico and Wabaunsee High School 9-12 in Alma. McFarland students will be bussed to schools in both Paxico and Alma Schools.
Churches
The City of McFarland has two churches, Trinity Lutheran Church and Baptist Church. Other area churches include the Methodist Church in Paxico and Alma. United Church of Christ (evangelical) is in Alma, and the Holy Catholic Church is in Alma and Newbury. Lutheran Church in Alma.
United State Postal Services:
McFarland has no door delivery, mail, or services. Mail is posted via a rented post office box at the post office. Post Office hours of operation are Window service M-F 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Sat. 10 AM to 12 PM. The Post Office is open to the public 24/7 to get your mail. If you have a package and cannot collect it during open hours of operation, call either number listed to make arrangements to get your parcel. Cemetery:
McFarland City Cemetery is located south, just off Interstate 70 interchange and west of Highway 185. The cemetery is divided into a City section and a Lutheran section, with the northern half being the Lutheran side and the southern half being the city side. Sextants for the cemetery are Lutheran Sextant Tom Dillingham (785) 765-3457 and City Sextant Jeff Osif, (785) 456-4056. McFarland City Cemetery lots are available for purchase at $200 a lot. Pride Committee- Team McFarland
The City of McFarland has a volunteer group effort that supports the clean-up of the right-of-way of Highway 185 as well as other projects related to the beautification of the town. Contact Johna Nehring for more information at (785) 499-3111.
